I kinda remember seeing Poster Children at Sudsy Malones in Cincinnati... but I don't have them in my rotation. I will check them out!

That guy worked on so many great records.

Loved this part, reread it a few times and felt the emotions. “Everyone’s three-dimensional body language said more than a tiny face trapped in a Zoom box. The hugs, the handshakes, the back slaps—they felt good.”

WOW! I remember you talking about Karl Hendricks, and the Middle East too. This was a great read. Thanks for sharing.

I saw The Karl Hendricks Trio play when I was in college (I think they played with Silkworm?). If you still want to vicariously experience the Boston music scene, you should (if you don't already!) check out my friend Brad's blog - http://www.bradleysalmanac.com/.

Yes! Hollis formerly known as Hollis from Cohart. :) I saw a post from your design substack on LinkedIn and then ended up here!

AFAIK, the only way to subscribe to bradleysalmanac is via RSS.

Thanks for this!

I just finished reading Love, Death & Photosynthesis by Bela Koe-Krompecher at 3am this morning, and the previous night i had read the chapter where he talks about meeting Karl and so when i went work in the morning i put on some KHT. Wild coincidence. Glad I got to see KHT once.

Amazing. Sadly that book sits unread on my shelf. I’ll have to crack it open!

I love that song though… do you know the compilation called “I stayed up all night listening to records”? It’s a got a song by Jerry Wick by that name. I think Karl Hendricks is on there as well

I have the comp. Need to break it out. The book was great. very funny, but sad. I'm bummed that I got to the record store he was reading at during DromFest too late to hear him read from it. The alcove they had people reading from was right next to the front door and I didn't want to be that guy. Now I wish maybe I had.

🙋‍♀️ I remember Karl Hendricks Trio! Going to school in Pittsburgh in the late 90s exposed me to the greatest bands. I feel so lucky to have had that experience. Thanks for bringing back those memories!

Yeah I found one! What a great time and place to be in college. I think all those bands came to Cincinnati after Pittsburgh.

Hey Matthew! Just wanted to say thank you for remembering Karl. I remember him and think about him nearly every day. I’m the last in the line of bass players in the Rock Band/Trio. As a singer/songwriter who moved to Pittsburgh in the mid-90’s, Karl was the most humble and kind “rock star”, accessible pretty much any day of the week at Paul’s CD’s, the record store he loved, and would eventually own under the name Sound Cat. He was an easy person to look up to.

It was a dream come true to be able to join one of my favorite bands, and then to record/engineer The World Says.

But what I didn’t bargain for was gaining one of my best friends and a family. Karl was truly one of the great ones. RIP, buddy. Thanks again for keeping his memory alive and for getting his music.

I am so happy you came across this.

Thanks for reading and reaching out.

That does sound like a dream come true!

I wish I had met him... nice to hear from someone who knew him so well that he was as awesome as I imagined.

I had never heard of Karl Hendricks, but now I'll have to check him out.

Do you know Poster Children? They are from Champaign, Illinois where I went to grad school, and Steve Albini produced a couple of their records. I think they'd be right up your alley. 🎸

That conversation with ChatGPT is downright creepy! 🤖
